Saint-Etienne, UNESCO creative city of design, is the guest of honour at the Design Monat Graz Festival, 2014, organised by Creative Industries Styria, the organisation in charge of the programme for Graz, UNESCO creative city of design (Styria region, Austria). Design Monat is an annual festival which displays the intense activity of creative industries in the Styria region, and highlights the contribution of creative processes to the economy. It offers a platform for innovative design projects and facilitates encounters between creators. The festival proposes a rich programme in partnership with the FH Joanneum Technical University, clusters and networks of enterprises, local institutions, museums, cultural actors, galleries and businesses. In 2013, Design Monat attracted more than 75,000 visitors for a programme of 53 events spread over a period of 30 days.
Every year, since becoming a member of the UNESCO network of creative cities (March 2011), the city of Graz invites one of the UNESCO creative cities for a central exhibition. Following Buenos Aires in 2012, and Nagoya in 2013, Saint-Etienne will be the guest of honour of the festival from April 30th to June 1st 2014, with:
– 1 exhibition of 500m2 in the Design Halle called Saint-Etienne design
In addition to this exhibition, designers and local actors from Saint- Etienne will be invited to take part in other festival events:
– Conferences, currently being programmed with Creative Indutries Styria and FH Joanneum, from May 13th to May 15th 2014 with Michel Philippon, architect and teacher at the ESADSE, Ella and Pitr, Saint-Etienne artists, and a representative from the Saint-Etienne Public Planning Organisation (EPASE)

– Assembly, the fashion design section of the Design Monat from May 15th to May 18th 2014, with the participation of a Saint-Etienne stylist creator in the fashion parades and programme activities.
The exhibition Saint-Etienne design meets Graz is built like a circuit over an area of 500m2, inviting the visitor to discover where and with whom design is developing in the city. Its aim is to explain that design is a tool for improving the daily life of the citizens of Saint-Etienne. It shows that design is a revealing factor and a catalyst of the creative potential of all, through the installations introduced for: – Public policies – The city for all – Urban space – Habitat – Schools – Enterprises – Businesses and shops – Creative district of the Manufacture, the Cité du design and the ESADSE – Exhibitions
This project is the fruit of rich cooperation and collaboration between Saint-Etienne and Graz. The scenography is by 2 students from the Joanneum University of Graz. The exhibition will then move to Saint-Etienne and be displayed from July 4th to September 21st 2014 in the heart of the Platine building at the Cité du design.
